Knocking In

English willow must be knocked in before it faces a hard ball. Work a mallet across the face and edges for several hours over multiple sessions, starting gently and building up, rounding the edges as you go. Follow with throw-downs using an old ball. Oil lightly two to three times a season with raw linseed — face, edges and back only, never the splice or stickers.
