Knocking In Your New Bat

A new English willow bat is not ready to face a hard ball out of the wrapper. Spend several hours across multiple sessions working a mallet over the face and edges, starting soft and building up, and round the edges as you go. Then use it against an old ball in the nets before match day. Proper knocking in compresses the fibres so the blade withstands impact — skip it and you will crack the bat, and no warranty covers that.
