Mid Profile vs Low Profile — Which Should You Buy?

A mid-blade profile places the sweet spot in the centre of the blade. It suits batters who play off both feet and wickets with a bit of bounce. A low profile drops the middle toward the toe and favours front-foot drivers on flatter, lower decks. Neither is better in the abstract — it depends where the ball most often meets your bat. If you're unsure, mid profile is the safer buy: it gives up very little at either end and covers far more situations.

Choosing Your Bat Weight

Pick-up matters more than the number on the sticker. A well-balanced 2.10 can feel lighter through the shot than a badly-shaped 2.8. Hold the bat one-handed at the top of the handle and extend your arm — if your wrist gives out quickly, it's too heavy. Most senior club batters sit between 2.8 and 2.10. Go lighter if you play a lot of spin and rotate strike; heavier if you look to hit through the line.

Knocking In and Care

English willow must be knocked in before facing a hard ball. Work a mallet over the face and edges for several hours across multiple sessions, building from gentle taps to firmer blows and rounding the edges as you go, then use it against an old ball in the nets before match day. Oil lightly two to three times a season with raw linseed on the face, edges and back only — never the splice or the stickers. Store it flat and dry, out of hot car boots. Skipping the knock-in is the most common cause of a first-season crack, and it isn't covered by warranty.
