What "Pick-Up" Actually Means

Pick-up is how heavy a bat feels in the swing, and it has more to do with weight distribution than with the number on the scales. Two bats can both read 2.9 and feel completely different: the one with its mass concentrated lower and closer to the handle axis swings noticeably faster. For a timing player this is the single most important quality in a bat — more than grains, more than edge thickness. Pick a bat up one-handed and hold it out before you judge it on anything else.

Semi-Oval or Round Handle?

A round handle allows free rotation and suits wristy players who work the ball square. A semi-oval handle is flattened on one side so the bottom hand has a definite reference point, keeping the face square through the shot — which is why it's the usual choice for players who score most of their runs driving straight and through the off side.

Caring for Grade 1 Willow

Knock in thoroughly before facing a hard ball — six to eight hours with a mallet across several sessions, rounding the edges as you go, then throw-downs with an old ball. Fit a toe guard and edge tape from day one; both are inexpensive next to the bat. Oil lightly two or three times a season on the face, edges and back only, never the splice or stickers, and store the bat flat, dry and away from heat.
